Are the banks good places to work
Generally, banking
business is defined as holding money for customers, paying money drawn on
customers’ accounts, loaning money to customers, and collecting interest from
borrowers. The same business model applies to credit unions and savings and
loan institutions, with some exceptions for market focus in these firms.
Banking for centuries was conducted entirely by the various staff employed by
the banks, and accounts were recorded by the hand of a bank employee.
- Since the advent of computers, the Internet,
and EFTPOS (electronic funds transfer at point of sale) it may seem that
computers might someday replace nearly all the jobs in banking in the
past. Nothing could be further from the truth, as banks are bigger than
ever, employ more people than ever in the past, and many jobs and duties
must still be handled or overseen by a person.
• Banks and credit
unions employ many people for various positions. At the core of a bank are bank
tellers, bank or branch managers, loan and mortgage officers, credit analysts,
and office or administrative staff.
• Larger banks
employ many different levels of each of those five positions, according to the
responsibility of the position. Additionally, larger banks also employ other
company staff, such as human resources, personnel, payroll, information
technology (computers and software), and marketing staff, similar to what would
be found at any large company.
- Most retail banks, with a few exceptions,
offer daily shift times and allow most employees to enjoy free time on
weekends, evenings, and holidays. Usually, credit unions and banks are
rarely open on holidays, but some call centers and retail banks,
particularly those located inside a grocery store or department store, are
frequently open on weekends and some evenings. The advantage for
professionals who choose banking is that they can frequently choose to go
to work for a bank with a schedule that will fit the needs of their
personal life.
• Most banks have
excellent benefit packages, offering medical, dental, and life insurance
benefits as well as retirement plan options and personal or sick leave days and
vacation benefits. Offices are always clean and pleasant, heated or
air-conditioned, since personal comfort, both for the employee as well as for
the customer, is of utmost importance. Banks are required to be regularly
examined and audited and must follow many regulations and procedural rules and
fair trade practices, making a bank or a regulatory agency a highly supervised
and safe environment for all employees.
- Banking institutions offer many opportunities for advancement, and many banks will even pay for or reimburse the talented employee for continuing education courses, as well as courses toward a college degrees, with some requirements. Banks and banking regulatory agencies offer many opportunities for advancement for ambitious professionals. A skilled and knowledgeable banking professional will be in demand for promotions both within his or her own bank (depending on the bank’s size), as well as in other competing banks with similar departments. Banking is an industry that is not projected to go away in the near or far future–far from it. With the growing economy in many developing countries as well as our own, and with the continuous growth in population, there will continue to be a growing need for banks to hold and loan money, to make monetary transactions, and to keep hiring people.
Considering the
above facts we may consider HR people in Banks should make more
attention about the working environment of the employees attached to the organisation
.
Finally all the
factors related to the pleasant working environment will be make happy
employees with the maximize profit to the organisation .
Why are happy, engaged employees a competitive advantage for the entire business activities ? Let’s break it down:
Job satisfaction
reduces stress. Stress can affect job performance, mental and physical
well-being, and even decision-making. high-stress, high-pressure work
environment can lead employees to make unethical choices.
Satisfied employees
have a more positive attitude, which spreads to co-workers and everyone else
the employee interacts with in their job, including the customers they work
with on a day-to-day basis.
Employees who are
happy with their jobs are more willing to participate in training programs and
are more eager to learn new technologies. As we know, technology is rapidly
changing in the banking world, so if your bank’s employees are happy, they’ll be
more apt to learn and change with the times.
Engaged employees
lead to happy customers. According to the several researches reviled ,
companies with engaged employees have more satisfied customers than companies
with unhappy, disengaged employees.
Why is a positive working environment important?
positive working environments provide several benefits
for both employees and employers. This is because this type of environment can
lead to employee success and happiness both personally and professionally. Here
are four reasons why a positive work atmosphere is important in the workforce.
Increases productivity
Having a positive working environment is a great way to
increase work output. When the employee
happier, company may be more productive and more equipped to complete their
tasks efficiently. This can also help you become a better employee, which leads
to raises and promotions.
Improves morale
Moods and attitudes affect company team members, a
positive working environment can be a good influence on those around the
organisation. When we view their work in a positive way, it can influence how
others in the workplace see their responsibilities too.
Fosters growth
When the employees motivated to succeed in their
position, they are more apt to find
opportunities to advance in your career. When your employer provides positive
reinforcement, it can make them feel like a valuable contribution to the
company, and it may motivate you to continue or improve upon this behavior.
When employees motivated on an individual level, they were
able to support and encourage others in their company. This can also lead to
improved professional relationships with colleagues. The greater the bond is between
coworkers, the better chance a company has of achieving its short- and
long-term goals. This is because teamwork is often the foundation of company
success.

thing that needs to be delivered and that is understanding. An employee working
in the company can feel better in his / her working place only if he/she feels

with the advancements in technology do you think the face to face interactions in a bank could become obsolete in the future and do you think that looms in the minds of the employees also?
ReplyDeleteYes Akila,
ReplyDeleteTechnology and digitization have transformed enabling them with real-time actionable insights to make informed decisions, creating competitive advantages and elevating consumer experience. This also allows banks to share potential products, upsells, cross-sells, and strategic planning with customers.
how ever as discussed in above many jobs and duties still be handled by a person . it should still be the truth.
Isuri, This is a great article as you illustrated the topic well, the factors which affects banks to be a great place to work. Further as I think protecting employees' mental health also important on this matter. According to the mental health foundation, 14.7% of employees encounter mental health problems at work. Women in full - time employment are also twice as likely to struggle with mental health issues. Taking about mental health can go a long way towards helping employees feel supported & happy at work.
ReplyDeleteYes, Totally agreed with you Damitu,
ReplyDeleteThe National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ranked occupations for stress levels, and founded bank teller positions are one of the most stressful occupations in the world.. What these stressful occupations had in common was that the employee had insufficient control over the work, with employees feeling that they were trapped in jobs where they were regarded as quasi-machines rather than as people. ; if we extend the 12 most stressful occupations , bank tellers feature in the list (Michailidis and Georgiou, 2005). Empirical studies have indicated that it is difficult for working women to manage and balance global stress perceived by them at the workplace include psychological and physical work demands. However, support from the organization, family, and friends have increasingly been recognized as useful in reducing stress, protecting the health and enhancing the quality of life (Asnani, Pandey & Swhnay,2004).So considering this factors i believe psychological stable is most important thing than all other factors and HRM to be focus more than attention on this regard.
Excellent article Isuri.Happy working environment makes employee happy. We spend most of our time in working environment. Therefore good working environment help employees to keep healthy, low stress life style. It directly benefit for organizational goals & targets.
ReplyDeleteYes Chaturika, if employees feel that they have control over what they are doing they take responsibility for their own productivity and happiness. They feel respected and valued.
